Patients can develop an AKI from a wide variety of causes. Despite the classic categorization of AKIs as being pre-renal, intrinsic, or post-renal, this differentiation is difficult to make during the patient’s initial visit. To date the available literature gives us limited guidance in terms of how to risk stratify patients with AKI.
