Sexual identity is an individual's assessment of their sexual orientation. It is important to remember that sexual identity and sexual behavior are not synonymous; there may be a discordance between an individual's sexual behavior and their sexual identity. Awareness of gender identity (one’s sense of being male, female, androgenous, or non-binary) is something that happens early in life. There are many practices that pediatricians can put into place that allow parents and children the freedom to comfortably share concerns about sexual development and gender identity.
