Counsel parents to pay attention to their child’s sleeping habits, mood, level of social activity, and enjoyment of activities as potential red flags for developing depression or being at risk for suicide. Parents can be counseled to enter their adolescent’s world by sharing in the same activities or interests as a way to gain insight into their child. Providers should spend one-on-one time with adolescents during patient encounters to gain information an adolescent may be hesitant to share with their parents.
