Factitious disorder by proxy, previously known as Munchausen’s, is a rare disorder where the parent or caregiver makes up or causes illness/injury to a person under their care.  Diagnosis of the disorder often happens after multiple hospitalizations or encounters and a thorough workup fails to reveal a cause in combination with concerning behavior from the caretaker/parent.  Management should include collaboration with patient’s primary care provider, social work, and CPS.
