Editor’s note: The referenced FDA briefing document reported: “In the United States, COVID-19 cases occurring in children 5-11 years now constitute 39% of cases in individuals younger than 18 years of age. Among cases of COVID-19 in individuals less than 18 years of age from the COVID-NET network, approximately 4,300 have resulted in hospitalization. As of October 17, 2021, 691 deaths from COVID-19 have been reported in the United States in individuals less than 18 years of age, with 146 deaths in the 5-11 year age group.
