Chris -

I had not been familiar with the evidence in support of probiotics decreasing antibiotic associated diarrhea so this segment was particularly interesting. As a hospitalist it seems like a significant proportion of my patients are on antibiotics and all too often we see the diarrhea that can follow.

While what was presented here seems practice-changing, I recall the saying of not wanting to be the first and not wanting to be the last to implement a new or changed practice. At least where I practice, I am not aware of probiotics being used routinely like this as being a common practice. Neda or others, is this something you have put into practice yourself yet or that you have seen your colleagues doing?

Neda F., MD -

Thanks, Chris, for this and your other observations for the month! I have begun putting these probiotic recommendations into my own practice, in large part because my new clinical colleagues were already doing this and it forced me to look into the literature for myself. My pediatrician had also recommended this for my own son, which also led me to examine the literature.
