Checking for proteinuria and glycosuria is standard of care in many institutions as a means to screen for pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes.  A review of the evidence suggests that we have other, much better screening tests (check blood pressure for pre-eclampsia and oral glucose tolerance test for diabetes) and urine dipping can be safely discontinued in the low risk population.
