Viral warts are common in children and most resolve spontaneously without treatment. Salicylic acid with regular paring and occlusion is the preferred treatment for cutaneous viral warts. Cryotherapy in combination with salicylic acid is recommended as a second line treatment.

The segment on Warts from October 2020 contradicts the TIDBSI: Cryotherapy from September 2020 in regards to number of freeze-thaw cycles (2-3 vs single, respectively). Which one should we lean towards? Or is it a matter of location of the lesion and suspected diagnosis? Thank you!

Neda F., MD -

Hi James. Thanks for this great catch. The Doctors DeClerck, Justin, Paul and I have gotten together to chat about this. Dr. Britt DeClerck was sharing traditional, customary teachings and what her clinical practice has always been, and our own Justin and Paul were sharing the somewhat surprising findings of their lit search. Based on the literature, it seems like you can still lean towards 1 freeze-thaw cycle and see how the patient does. Thank you for writing!
