There are other considerations .
Coughing with pyrexia in high risk patients especially Pregnancy and Elderly and Immunocomprimised including alcholism and IV drug use .
If prescribing doxycycline you have to ask re possible pregnancy especially early pregnancy .
Mycoplasma Pneumonia in epidemics can cause complications in pregnancy to the developing foetus .
It would be hard not to give a broad spectrum antibiotic and azithromycin to a pregnant women patient over 65 and Immunocomprimised Patient with a lot of coughing and fever above 38.0 and in the influenza season not to start a neuramidase inhibitor .

Neda F., MD -

Does anyone know the source for "13-20% of coughs > 1wk are due to pertussis?"

Neda F., MD -

Hi Adam. Thanks for your question. Dr. Haskins shared the following article: http://annals.org/aim/article-abstract/718404/adults-whooping-internists-listening
