This was an excellent overview of the diagnosis and treatment of depression in dementia, but I am curious why escitalopram received specific mention and not citalopram. UpToDate suggests that the side effect profile is quite similar for the two in general, but escitalopram is more than three times the cost of citalopram (according to the Canadian pricing in RxFiles). In the spirit of trying to avoid needless high costs in healthcare, is there a specific reason to choose escitalopram over citalopram for depression in patients with dementia?
