The American College of Physicians developed 4 guidance statements regarding the treatment of diabetes mellitus type 2 with medications; these include the importance of personalized goals, a goal A1c of 7-8% for most adults, deintensifying treatment in patients with A1c of <6.5%, and moving away from A1c goals entirely in patients with limited life expectancy.
