Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition which affects roughly 1% of the population. Diagnosis is made through a combination of clinical suspicion, laboratory testing, and duodenal biopsy.  Treatment is a gluten-free diet. Patients with celiac disease are at higher risk for other autoimmune conditions like type 1 diabetes and autoimmune hypothyroidism.
