Wonderful podcast.....now if I can just get my attending to agree to do this.

Rob O., MD -

I hear ya. When I first found out about this, I thought, "what a bunch of crap" but looking at the data and talking with experts, it's a wonder that we weren't/aren't taught about this in training. Have your attending listen to the podcast or at least read the literature. I suspect it will lead to interesting conversation. This is so contrary to what we've done for decades in EM (iron? that's for outpatients!) that it will take a while for it to be widely accepted.

Andrew K. -

I had the perfect patient for this today and was excited, only to learn that my hospital has permanently removed iron dextran from its formulary!

Rob O., MD -

Hey Andrew, I found the same thing had happened at my hospital and have had to use an alternate form of iron that takes more than one infusion, which is frustrating. I've done the first dose in the ED and then sent note to the primary care doc about the rest so that they can drive the steer things post discharge.
